But if you're recording keyboards or guitars and are using virtual instruments, if your keyboard has any built-in sounds, you can listen to that while you're recording (with input monitoring on the track turned off), then hear it with the virtual sound of your choice when you play it back. If you're playing a keyboard that's only a controller and has no sound by itself, then the computer becomes the instrument and it will take a certain amount of time for the sound to be generated. Virtual instruments are a different can of worms. See if you have that option, and engage it if you do.
